I recently got a 7th grader's perspective on what the discipline of psychology is about. I was in a school conducting research and a student asked me if I taught about reverse psychology. I told him that I do not teach about it much because it is a small part of psychology (trying to be gentle). His response was "Why not? It works great in cartoons!" At first I was disappointed that this student thought of Bugs Bunny when he thought of psychology. Then I thought "Hey Bugs is a step up from Freud!" So I left feeling good about the progress we are making in public understanding.
