Hey Beth,
I thought I was being an old fuddy-duddy by having students read these
articles....
I would add
Harlow's Love in Infant Monkeys
Muzafer Sherif's Experiments in Group ConflictSolomon Asch's opinions and
Social PressureMichael Gazzaniga's The Slit Brain

and B.F. Skinner's Baby in a Box

I started to type out favorites, then went to a wonderful text called Sources:
Notable Selections in Psychology, by Terry F. Pettijohn. (The only down side
is that most of the articles are condensed.) It has all of the ones below,
plus many others, for a total of 50. I'd think psychology majors should ask
for it for Christmas/Hannukkah/Kwanzaa.

Rosenthal and Jacobson's "Teachers' expectancies: Determinants of pupils' IQ
gains"
Sperry, "Hemisphere deconnection and unity in conscious awareness"
Janet Shibley Hyde's "Children's understanding of sexist language" (I make that
one required reading for many classes)
Loftus, "Leading questions and the eyewitness report"
Seligman, "Helplessness: On depression, development, and death"
Rosenhan, "On being sane in insane places"
Selye, "The evolution of the stress concept"
Darley and Latane', "When will people help in a crisis?"
Ainsworth, "Infant-Mother attachment"
Kohlberg, "The child as a moral philosopher"
Watson and Rayner, "Conditioned Emotional Reactions
Gibson and Walk, "The visual cliff"
Buss, "The strategies of human mating"
Dion and Dion, "Belief in a just world and physical attractiveness stereotyping"
and of course, Milgram's "Behavioral study of obedience"

Wow, that was really fun. Kind of like looking through a favorite old
scrapbook. Thanks for the challenge, Susan.

Subject: [tips] Important articles for undergraduate reading.

I mentioned to my research class that there are some basic articles in
psychology that are frequently cited and should be read by all undergrad
psychology majors.

I mentioned Bandura’s Bobo doll study and Miller’s 7+- 2.

What articles would you add to the list?

Are there any contemporary articles that you see as potentially having the same
status down the line?
