Do you have the film, "Shine," with Geoffrey Rush directed by Scott Hicks?
It's based on a true story of David Helfgot (still alive) who was
expected to a world renown pianist but had a breakdown in his late teens,
early 20's resulting in a form of schizophrenia. Many folks seem to
prefer "A Beautiful Mind" re: schizophrenia but the major advantage of
this film is that it starts with David's childhood and shows the stresses
he experienced though out. The literature is clear that people who
develop schizophrenia usually have experienced severe stresses during
childhood and you see this first hand in this film due to an overbearing
and exceedingly demanding father. Of course, Scott Hicks has been
criticized for drawing an "unfair" depiction of Peter Helfgot, but he
stands by his story relative to the facts as he as acquired them.

Whatever, I mind it a brilliantly acted film that shows how serious mental
illness can be partially caused by early ongoing pressures and stress as
well as how people can significantly improve with unconditional love and
support--something David receives from angelic Sylvia and then, later, the
woman who marries him. If some of you are looking for an brilliant film
to watch this weekend, I would recommend it for that as well.
