Michael- Perhaps. Or maybe it represents the problem with the
assumptions of whomever asked the question (which is poorly formed). I
believe that research indicates that it depends also on the context in
which the question is asked (math class or outside). It has always
seemed obvious to me that the birds would fly off when the gun was
fired. :) Truth be told it is a poorly formed question to which a
variety of answers are equally correct. Tim

Afrocentric Psychology:  
There were two birds on a tree.And one was shot.The master asked the
European kids "How many remained .on the tree?" They said one.
He turned to the African kids and asked the same question.The African
kids answered none because the other one would fly away.
This probably demonstrates the African understanding of real experience
in contrast to the Eurocentric penchant for mathematical reasoning as
fact.
The independent variable as is understood in psychological research seem
to rob phenomenon of real content.
