Blaine--

I didn't do any particular assignments, but students found that article
EXTREMELY helpful in the experimental class I taught last fall. For most of
them, APA style meant only a series of cosmetic formatting conventions; the
deeper aspects of it had never been made clear to them. APA style goes against
what most students have been taught is good writing--developing a distinctive
style, eschewing the passive voice, etc.--and having this made explicit is both
intellectually helpful and emotionally validating. ("I"m not crazy! You really
*are* trying to get me to do everything my English teacher ever told me not
to!")

I am going to have research methods students read the Madigan et al.
(1995) article on The Language of Psychology (American Psychologist). I would
appreciate any insights about what to expect from discussions of the article
(and any related sources) or examples of assignments you use with this article.

  thank you, blaine
