Tho we have tongues in cheek--similar arguments are made for why schools do not
teach handwriting, and it would not surprise me to see schools tout such
media/Internet babysitters as a substitute for reading lessons. I imagine many
are already piping in television programming for a variety of lessons.
I think we should just present some chit-chat about areas of psych, have
students generate some personal experiences that are tied to such topics,
assign some television programming for psych relevance, and give them passing
grades for participation and handing in appropriate Wikipedia references. I
think we could do this entirely on-line, and I could start discussion, chat,
and grade from my condo in Hawaii. Okay, maybe overlooking the Tittabewassee
River in Bay City, MI! It would be engaging, less stressful, and not require
objective testing (the class, not the Tittabewassee!). I knew just writing
about this would be helpful. I now have less angst about that silly reading
comprehension problem! ;-) Of course..there may be a problem with
comprehension of those television programs too, but they just need to show it
is relevant to their lives. Hey, isn't Positive psych great!? Gary
