Seriously, Chris, this is scary stuff re: the "Land of the relatively free so 
long as we don't disagree with the conservatives and the home of the brave so 
long as that means going to other countries to die but I'm not standing up for 
my basic rights here". Tim

The article seems to go to some lengths to show that this is not a liberal or 
conservative issue with quotes from both Republicans and Democrats in favor of 
civil commitment. The map at:

indicates that some of the reddest and bluest states (Washington, California, 
Arizona, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, 
Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, 
Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire) have such laws with the possibility 
that New York will be next.
