Last week, I emailed this to the support staff at Google Scholar; I'm
still waiting for a response:

-----

I am deeply in love with Google Scholar, but I think I may have found
a bug.

The use of the "or" operand actually seems to reduce the number of
hits relative to the use of individual terms. Two examples:

  neurotransmitter: 224,000 hits
  neurotransmitters: 144,000 hits
  neurotransmitter OR neurotransmitters: 177,000 hits

  serotonin: 488,000 hits
  dopamine: 663,000 hits
  serotonin OR dopamine: 508,000 hits

When I do a regular Google search, the "or" operand seems to behave
more as I'd expect it to:

  neurotransmitter: 5,770,000 hits
  neurotransmitters: 4,020,000 hits
  neurotransmitter OR neurotransmitters: 6,120,000 hits

  serotonin: 8,880,000 hits
  dopamine: 9,040,000 hits
  serotonin OR dopamine: 15,800,000 hits

If at all possible, can I hear back from you on this one?

Thanks,
David Epstein
