I can see I need to amend the last sentence in my previous message so that we don't get caught up on a side-issue:
So what is it with people who have to (re)define the non-religious societies of Stalin or Mao as "religious" so that they can maintain their faith (and I use the word advisedly) that their atheist intellectual position somehow precludes the possibility of government-level perpetration of barbarities on a mass scale in a society in which atheism is the prevailing creed.
