Hi I wonder if the students who produce this effect think that "reading the textbook" is equivalent to "looking at pictures"? There is a considerable literature on the pros and cons of visuals in textbooks, including work by Richard Mayer. Some general conclusions are mentioned in the following interview, although it focuses on powerpoint.
