Questions about Theories of Consciousness

  Hi all,

I began teaching an evening class on the Psychology of Consciousness last
week and have a question. In the book I am using it mentions Representational
Theories. The two theories are the "higher-order perception theory" and the
"higher-order thought theory". Are both of these theories occurring in a state
of consciousness or a state of unconsciousness and then entering a state of
consciousness? Also, this may sound somewhat silly, but what are "first order
states"?

Thank you for any help you can provide,
  Nina

work by Tart.I think his work is titled States of Consciousness.Robert Ornstein
is also a good source. In the Asian Journal of Thomas Merton, there is a piece on
Mindfulness.Jean Paul Sartre Being and Nothingness is anther work.Good
