Here is an interesting article that appeared in The Guardian a couple of
days ago about peer review. The main object is the British Academy's
response to a critique of peer review issued last year by Research
Councils UK. The coverage of the issue goes much further than that,
however. Among other things, the British Academy recommends that the
activity of peer reviewing be shored up by giving it some standing in
the tenure and promotion process. As one professor quoted in the article
puts it, "this kind of activity counts for nix, nothing, zilch in the
research assessment exercise."
