Michael Sylvester,PhD from Daytona Beach,Florida asked:

How much weight should be given to a prof's membership in
professional organizations pertaining to tenure, rank, and personnel
applications, and other academic variables?... Do some organizations carry
more clout than others? ... Do screening committees verify the veracity of
a prof's listed memberships? ... Is it more scientifically currect to
belong to the American Psychological Society than the American
Psychological Association?

It would also be interesting to know if/how additional consideration
is/should be given for: holding an office, achieving fellow status,
editing organizational newsletter etc. Is merely belonging and attendng
meetings and reading publications recognized or is it specific
accomplishments within the organization that are recognized? Do academic
institutions pay for dues? If so, is payment based upon a fixed annual
entitlement or accomplisment within the professional organization or other
factors such as appraisal rating,
