Professional bike racers offer predictions about their chances of winning "if the legs are good."

But Ken Steele doen't see anything deep in this phraseology because that is how gifted athletes are objectified by commentators.

I was talking about this with a friend and he said that what always perplexed him about singers is that they seem to "disembody" their voices by referring to their voice as "the voice" or "the gift". Why is that? He asked. Frankly, I don't know. It's an interesting observation though. Any thoughts on this? I don't know if there's an interesting psychological answer or perspective on the tendency for singers to do this, but before dismissing it I thought I'd ask this list. I wonder if other talented people do this as well. Do baseball pitchers refer to their pitching arm as "The Arm". Any thoughts? If so, why would this be?

Thanks,

Michael
