Thanks, Beth!

I saw Christopher's post just before I ran out to Toscanini's--a local and VERY
popular ice-cream place--that was giving away free samples of their new flavor,
Ig Nobel Vanilla. Also known as Yum-a-Moto Vanilla Twist, in honor of Mayu
Yamamoto, who won the chemistry prize for managing to extract vanillin from cow
dung.

Ms. Yamamoto's English is better than she thinks it is, but it was still quite
a moment to hear this beautiful young Japanese woman enthusiastically urge the
audience to "Eat ice cream with cow dung!"

People reacted even more strongly to the sword swallower who gave his
acceptance speech WITH AN 18" SWORD IN HIS THROAT. (He and his co-author won
the medicine prize for an article in the BMJ entitled "Sword Swallowing and Its
Side Effects" or something like that. There are side effects t sword
swallowing, and they are pretty well what you would expect.)

The server at Improbable.com has crashed, unfortunately, so you can't see all
the awards there, but I've blogged a bit about the ceremony at
www.boston.com/missconduct.

I suspect that people new to TIPS might not know that our own Robin
Abrahams (from Cambridge, Mass.) and her husband are the Ig Nobel
founders/presenters. I suspect Robin is being her usual un-self-congratulatory
self, so allow me to point out that she's also Miss Conduct for The Boston
Globe Magazine. Fun stuff!

Hey, Robin, if you get a chance...any fun anecdotes from this year's IgNobels?

Among the winners relevant to psychology is the famous self-refilling
soup bowl study.
