I hope your dept. chair has backbone.  I get many students who have had 
previous courses employing creative grading and tests that reward superficial 
work.  Many pass without knowing the material at a college level.  They tell me 
they never really had to crack the book open except maybe the night before the 
exam.  They are used to  a lot of participation credit and so-called extra 
credit work if they did not do well.  I understand the challenges given they 
lack traditional reading and note-taking skills, but many have no notes and do 
not read.  Sorry for the rant.  I really just wanted to concur with Beth for 
Jim to stick to the evidence.  Gary
