And let us not forget that it was stout -- Guinness in particular -- 
that brought us the much-beloved (or at least much-used) t-test. The 
test was invented in 1908 by William Gosset, who was working on quality 
control for the Guinness Brewery in Dublin. Because Guinness refused to 
allow Gosset to publish under his own name, he used the pseudonym 
"Student," and so the "Student's t" was born.
