An interesting contrast in the recent religious histories of the US and Canada: In the US religion, especially conservative literalist religion, came roaring back in the 1980s and 1990s. In Canada, the churches never recovered from the "implosion" of the 1960s.

(Note for US readers: the United Church of Canada is the result of a 1925 merger of the Presbyterians, Methodists, and Congregationalists. Some Presbyterians rejected the merger and continue on as a small sect of their own. The United Church has become the most liberal of the major Canadian denominations, accepting women and gay ministers, and consecrating gay marriages.)
