Dear Colleague

I am writing to introduce you to our Ph.D. program in Lifespan
Developmental Psychology at Oklahoma State University. We are 12
faculty, who conduct research on a range of topics representing the
entire life span from infancy to older adulthood. Our department was
profiled in 2005 in the AmericanPsychological Society's Observer
magazine (
http://www.psychologicalscience.org/deptProfile/viewProfile.cfm?viewID=1
24).

Students admitted to our program will receive training in life-span
developmental psychology (infancy through aging), statistics, research
design, as well as core courses that enable students to gain breadth in
psychology (e.g., neurobiological psychology, cognitive psychology,
social psychology, and learning).

Graduate students in our program work closely with a research advisor,
following the apprenticeship model of graduate training. Students are
encouraged to identify at least one faculty member with whom they have
an overlapping research interest. Contacting that faculty member prior
to applying to the program is advised, as the faculty member may be able
to assist the student during the application process.

All graduate students receive training in teaching, something that is
quite rare in graduate programs. Our second and third year students have
the opportunity to participate in thePreparing Future Faculty (PFF)
program at Oklahoma State University, which sponsored by the American
Psychological Association.

All students who have been admitted to the program have received
financial support in the form of teaching, research or administrative
assistantships. Our department also has a full-time graduate advisor who
can assist students with locating additional sources of funding, such as
travel grants and scholarships.

I hope you direct any interested students to our website
http://psychology.okstate.edu/grad/index.html.

Applications for the 2008-2009academic year should be received by
February 1, 2008.

I am happy to answer students' questions personally, so please encourage
any interested students to contact me. I will make sure that they
receive the information and/or materials that they seek.

Cordially,

David G. Thomas, Ph.D.
