I'm an empirical psychologist, so my bent is that psychology should be as
scientific as possible and we already have enough fuzzy areas without adding
"spirit" (without going near what 'development' of mind and spirit might mean).
We already have philosophy, religion, and spirituality in many flavors. How
would the psychological discipline be different than what is already available
within these areas?
As I see it, this kind of program could essentially be undefined. Perhaps it
could include Kirlian photography, auras, and therapeutic touch, to name a few
(although I would hope not).
Basically, graduate programs are time limited and any time spent in
questionable pursuits is time spent away from widely accepted areas of study.
Can Ph.D.'s in psychology afford the time?

Students have asked me how highly psychologists regard mind/body/spirit
graduate programs. For example, the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology
offers a doctoral program in Clinical Psych and the student was told it would
soon receive APA approval. This is a program touting mind/body/spiritual
development. I have mixed feelings about such programs, but my understanding
is that they are programs that represent the legacy of humanistic psych and
promote a diversity of meditative and spiritual perspectives. What advice
would tipsters have for psych majors considering such graduate work? Are there
any dangers, problems, or limitations to this Psychology career path? Are such
programs well-respected academically? Would a holder of such a
doctorate be a welcome addition to your department? Searching in spirit,
