Sorry, I meant to say that I give the makeup tests on the day of the final exam. Beth ----- Original Message ----- From: Beth Benoit To: Teaching in the Psychological Sciences (TIPS) Sent: Monday, February 25, 2008 10:42 AM Subject: Re: [tips] Subject: Am I special here?
Following the recommendation of a presenter at an APA conference many years ago, I always give the makeup test on the day of the exam. I put it in my syllabus that it will follow the exam, consist of all essay questions, and of course be more challenging than the original test. Whipping up ten essay questions to cover each test isn't too difficult. It cuts down on my having to wade through the possible validity of excuses. Incidentally, side effects of medication can make life difficult, but William Scott's student's "...I'm struggling right now with motivation..." kind of got me. Struggling with motivation??? Sigh. I find that my immediate face-to-face response to a student is to be gentle, sympathetic and kind, and often it isn't until later that I wonder if I should have had a little more backbone. Thus, my blanket rule of makeup test on last day of class serves me well, because I'm a softie.
