It's a long internal story why I did this but I computed the correlation between hs gpa, SAT verbal, SAT math scores, and first semester gpa for a subset of our freshmen last fall. (Too complicated here to explain how I picked the subset).
Bottom line: almost zero correlation between hsgpa and college gpa. Almost zero correlation between hsgpa and both SAT measures. SAT verbal was the best predictor of collge gpa (probably because freshmen level courses require a lot of reading and comprehension) and SAT math was OK but not great. Not using the SAT is a huge mistake IMHO.
