In today's NY Times "On This Day" feature there are a couple of events that might be worth noting. The Times' full list of "notable" events is available at:
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/20080621.html The first event is the news story on the disappearance of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia, Mississippi who were to be found dead weeks later. The events were dramatized by Alan Parker in his film "Mississippi Burning". It is worth noting how relatively recent these events are given that today an African-American is a nominee for the U.S. Presidency. The Times story for this 1964 event is available here: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/big/0621.html#article In a curious coincidence, on this day in 2005 the Times notes: |Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old former Ku Klux Klansman, |was found guilty of manslaughter in the deaths of three civil rights |workers in Philadelphia, Miss., 41 years to the day earlier. |(He is serving a 60-year prison sentence.) Another evemt of note is that today is the birthday of Jean-Paul Sartre. For some reason I feel anxious and meaningless. Sartre's NYT obituary is provided at: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/bday/0621.html Oh, to make this more obviously relevant to psychology, today is also Mariette Hartley's birthday ;-). For background see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariette_Hartley Of course, John Watson's courting and marriage to Mary Ickes leads us to Harold Ickes, a friend of the Clintons and fond of using the word "hijack".
