An interesting article on the use of CT scans for detecting
heart disease and the interplay between the desire for
showing that such procedures produce actual benefits
(i.e., conducting research that shows that people live
longer, avoid heart attacks, etc.) and the desire to use
the latest medical technology regardless of the cost,
both financial and to patients (e.g., unnecessary exposure
to relative high doses of radiation). Might be an
interesting case study for students to consider:
what is the evidence to support the use of this technology
and is it based on scientific considerations or other
kinds of considerations?
