I give a formative assessment at the start of each class the average of the correct answers are added t the test score. (Max 10. Typically 6) I also give an extra 5 for notes or vocab cards. I arrange the class i teacher selected groups of 4 and have them do the assessment. The scantrons that I use are also the attendance records (I keep them). Late arrivals and early departures may not accrue extra credit for that day. Works well. By the 3rd session everyone attends and on time. Mavelous. Extra credit is the "mothers-milk" of college students.
I love it. Been doing it for 15 years. I work inb a community college and I can use the Bernstein textbook. I use the difficult questions for the assessment-they take them home snd use them for study. On tests, where they have to work alone I use the easy questions. Students will do what you really expect of them! I expect adult behavior and I get it. Some love me-some hate me-few in between- but we , the students and I- get the job done. I must average 3 students a semester that switch their majors to psy. I get 3-4 requests for letters of rec when they apply to universities. The secret is to submerge your ego in service of the students.0 Best wishes. -----Original Message----- From: Melissa Terlecki [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thu 7/3/2008 3:46 PM To: Teaching in the Psychological Sciences (TIPS) Subject: [tips] textbook activities Dear Tipsters, I am looking for good suggestions to get students to read their Intro. to Psych. textbook by incorporating textbook activities (although the books I've used don't have end of chapter questions, etc.). Any good ideas for homework or activities to get them to read/to make sure they read? (aside from incorporating exam questions) Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dr. Melissa S.
