While we were discussing the placebo effect (and nocebo responses) in class, a student asked about the effectiveness of generic birth control. I explained that chemically, the generics were identical to brand name drugs and that they should be equally effective, but I told her I'd have to get back to her. I haven't been able to find anything definitively one way or the other, so I wanted to check with TIPSters to see if someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

To put her question in context, she was wondering in particular about "side effects" of the medication. I had mentioned the study that found that pain relief was better for expensive placebos than for cheap ones and that wines were rated more favorably when participants were told they were more expensive.
