Hi Cynthia,

I have given many online exams when I teach online courses of course. We use
Blackboard at Sacred Heart and so I provide the exams through that venue. I
usually have the exams available from Friday through Sunday, but once a student
opens the exam they must complete it at that point in time. I also set it up so
they are forced completion meaning they cannot leave the exam window at any
point in time. If another window pops up (if they are IMing) or if they go to
another window on the Internet the exam will automatically close and they will
be locked out of it. I give a hour and 30 minutes to complete the exam, which
always seems like plenty of time. I also set it up so that if a student
finishes a question and moves on to the next question they cannot return to any
previous questions. I do this so that students cannot look something up and
then go back and fill in the correct answer. If students have more time left
toward the end of the exam they would be able to get out their books and find
the correct answers, but the way I set it up takes care of that problem with
possible cheating. They cannot spend too much time on one question (trying to
find an answer in the textbook or email a friend) for fear they will run out of
time and so once they move on they cannot return to previous questions.

Hope that helps some.

Nina

Subject: [tips] online testing

My campus was flooded during Hurricane Ike's trip through the Midwest and we
have not held classes in two weeks.
As a result I am revising my Intro Psych syllabus and thought one way to find 3
extra days in the schedule would be to move
the exams to online. I can do this using ONCOURSE (our SAKAI based course
management system). My question to those who
have used online testing is as follows: when do you have the students take the
exam? If we held class Monday and Wednesday
and so were ready for an exam, would you schedule the online exam for Friday or
give them the entire weekend? Any other tips
online test users have would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks

Cynthia
