Our dept. and the biology dept. has been accused of inhumane use of
animals--depriving them of food for lever pressing, killing by gas, etc.
Specifically they are alleging that the use in these depts. vioolate our school
policies and anima IRB policies. The PETA complaint also alleges there are many
research studies showing the effectiveness of non-animal methods for achieving
our learning objectives. Altho, as social psychologist, I do value animal
work, most of my work is not employing animal models. I am just wondering if
other psych folks here have faced similar charges and what the
animal/learning/physio psych folks have done in response? Very little animal
research seems to go on in psych these days, and is there a value to having an
undergrad animal lab? I am sure there are apa briefs on this and that our
animal/learning folks here will respond, but thought I'd check with
tipsterland. Gary
