Hi everyone. I am a member of Psi Chi's Steering Committee for the
Eastern Region and we are trying to develop panel discussions and
symposia under the sponsorship of Psi Chi for next year's annual meeting
of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), which will meet in
Pittsburgh, March 5-9, 2009
(http://www.easternpsychological.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1). At
this time, we are thinking of having a poupuri-type panel on effective
teaching strategies tentatively titled: "Teaching strategies that work
for us". The idea is to present something that we do in the classroom
that is particularly effective and is kind of unique. Perhaps you have
some technique that encourages students to read the textbook, or
something that you do in a Statistics or Research Methods course that
helps students learn about a difficult topic. For example, as a member
of this panel I thought perhaps I would present a couple of exercises
that I use in class to deter text misappropriation in terms papers
(i.e., plagiarism) or describe what I do to teach students to identify
independent/dependent, discrete/continues, and qualitative/quantitative
variables (I start with articles, then move to abstracts, then simply
use titles of studies). Perhaps you have developed some exercise or
technique that you have used over the years, that works particular well,
and that you wish to share it with younger faculty. Ideally, you will
have some handouts that you can share with the audience for them to take
back to the classroom. At any rate, if you are interested please contact
me privately and we can discuss it further. If you wish you can send me
a short paragraph describing the technique. I will collect everyone's
contributions, put together an abstract, and submit it after obtaining
everyone's approval.

Miguel
