So was that the "What hath God wrought?" of e-mail or was that something he
said verbally about his e-mail project?

In praise of non-directive research, Sarah Palin notwithstanding:

According to _New Scientist_ magazine (October 16/08 at
http://tinyurl.com/64pp3u ) Ray Tomlinson was responsible for developing
the first programme for e-mail, and sent the first e-mail message. It's
now estimated that 210 billion e-mails are sent every day.

But when he started out back in 1971, he didn't want anyone to know about
it. According to a colleague, he cautioned " 'Don't tell anyone! This
isn't what we're supposed to be working on'".
