Undoubtedly the government support and co-operation with basic science has led
to many enterprises like the internet, space programs, and other engineering and
technological advancements. It appears that non-psychology basic science
attracts enterpreneurs who cautilize findings to practical uses and becomes a
part of the market economy. But what has basic psychology science contributed
to the market? Show me (I went to Mizzou) a company on the stock market that
can say that their products came directly from a behavioral scientist doing
basic research? This leads me to re-emphasize my position that whereas basic
research in psychology leads to the understanding of behavior, and I have no
objection to funding by private sources,I do not support government funding of
basicpsychological research( golden fleece comes to mind) that would not
contribute to the betterment of society, not to mention a lack of interests by
investors. Some researchers in sleep and memory could probably develop
investment projects, but as far as I am concerned behavioral scientists have
failed to incorporate a free-competitive market model.Basic behavioral
scientists are good at coming up with assessment tools,so maybe they can become
enterpreneurs for their findings.Maybe all those profs emeriti, experts.basic
researchers can begin constructing communities named Behavioral Habitats for
Hunanity. Investors anyone?
