Probably too much Canadiana for people tonight, but the natives are
restless. Can you blame them?

Anyway, in my last post I labeled Stephen Leacock a professor of
economics. Make that political science, or at least political economy,
whatever that is, and for which he is rarely remembered. What he is
remembered for, at least in Canada, is a brand of gentle humour which
would probably seem dated.

I did enjoy his short story, "My financial career" when I was forced to
read it in high school (http://www.ftrain.com/my_financial_career.html).
The final line has this all-too-relevant advice for us all in these
troubled times:

"Since then I bank no more. I keep my money in cash in my trousers pocket
and my savings in silver dollars in a sock. "

Also, a word on Chris's post about the dilemma our charming Governor-
General will be faced with: to prorogue or not to prorogue. According to
the People's News (CBC TV) tonight, the law is clear. She does not have a
choice, but is bound to carry our whatever the Prime Minister instructs
her concerning when parliament meets. So if he wants to prorogue, he
prorogues.
