I think it was archival data and/or samples.

In 1985 the Centers for Disease Control conducted a wide-ranging study of
4462 Vietnam era veterans. They collected numerous physiological,
psychological and demographic measures. It is a large database that may
never be fully explored. I am familiar with the database's existence and
wide range of data gathered due to my association with James M. Dabbs, Jr.
who had a study published in 1990 on some relationships with testosterone.

I believe the study used data and samples from that archive based on this
statement in the article, "The semen samples were collected in 1985 by the
US Centers for Disease Control as part of a large-scale study into the
health of US soldiers who served during the Vietnam Era. Some of the men in
our sample had served in Vietnam, some had served in Germany, Korea and the
USA."
