Michael Sylvester asked:
>Did the song Greensleeves first emerge as a Christmas carol?

No - as the words make clear:

"Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
to cast me off discourteously..."

Chorus:
"Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady Greensleeves."

It was composed in the sixteenth century by the prolific Trad. (Sometimes
unreliably attributed to Henry VIII.)
