The lyrics for What Child is this was written by William Dix in 1865 and later set to Greensleeves or as it says in my hymnal, an anonymous 16th c melody. Dix wrote this following a period of depression while recovering from a long and debilitating illness. Dix was an insurance salesman in Glasgow, Scotland (shades of Charles Ives). He wrote several other hymns including the Easter anthem, Alleluia, Sing to Jesus.
