My memory is that I heard about TIPS at NITOP; if that memory is accurate then I probably joined the list in spring of 96. I envy those of you who are at NITOP now.
I mostly lurk but enjoy and learn a lot from the interaction. One thing that has been implied in some of the posts about longevity is how valuable the list has been for meeting people. Thanks Bill! I also distributed information at NITOP with the assistance of Doug Bernstein; Dave Myers spread the word via his presentations and contacts and then Division 2 (now STP) spread the word. There are many other names that come to mind that helped but until I have more time to look through my records to verify I will wait on identifying others. In addition I made various presentations at conferences about TIPS and left various handouts on tables at the conferences I attended. Some may even remember writing TIPS on name tags at conferences. Fond memories.
