Generally it is the other way around- Karl was given release but wanted
to teach the course so he was compensated. You are buying (paying, in
other words) release from a course or two - often that is paid out of a
grant. I suspect the question is how much do I write into a grant to
gain release from one or more of my course load. I think generally it is
the cost of hiring a replacement. Normally here it is an adjuncts salary
per course. If it get's above about 1/3 of a load then the dean/vps get
edgy and want an equivalent amount of an instructor position. So here
for 1 or 2 courses release time the grant would have to provide at least
$2500/course. Above 3 courses it would move to 1/2 an instructors salary
which is negotiated with the dean. I would think that a dean or
equivalent administrator would have the answer to that question for your
school- but I also suspect you wouldn't be asking us if that were the
case.

Wow, people have a choice and can then get money for that? Great. I
don't think I live in that world ha. We do get release time, but I
don't think I could get cash for it directly. Gary

Last Spring I was offered a course release for some
administrative work. I did not want to give up either of my two courses
(I already had two course releases for research), so I said give me the
money instead. I tried to talk them into giving me an extra 25% pay
(since a "full" load is four courses), but that is not how it works.
They agreed to give me what it would cost to hire a part-time person to
teach a course, and that is $5,000 or less.

Cheers,

Karl W.

Greetings All,

I'm gathering some information on how much schools "charge" for a course

buyout (release time). If any of you are willing to share that
information with
me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Please email me off-list at:
[email protected]

I hope 2009 has started off well for each of you...

Best,
