This announcement of the death of the apostrophe in Birmingham is
premature. It only applies to street signs (as yet!):

>England's second-largest city has decided to drop apostrophes from
>all its street signs, saying they're confusing and old-fashioned.

The same 'problem' arises in relation to the area of London in which I
live, Shepherd's Bush, which is often written "Shepherds Bush". In fact my
neighbouring main road has the road sign "Shepherds Bush Road". A Google
check on my local Council website shows they generally have it as
"Shepherds Bush", though the journalists on the Council's [Councils?] free
weekly newssheet mostly opt for the apostrophe. The fight to maintain
standards goes on. :-)
