Hi all,
We are developing a research practicum course to parallel our Human
Services practicum course, and are seeking help with selecting texts,
creating a syllabus, etc.
We currently teach a required course in Quantitative Research Methods
that would be a prerequsite for this course, so we are NOT seeking
suggestions for an entry-level research methods course.
Rather, the intention is to develop a course for upper-level
undergraduates that supports them in engaging in research either on
campus or off campus (that is the "practicum" aspect of it), and
provides them with a forum in which to discuss/learn about/etc. elements
of the research process in greater detail than they might be able to do
in an intro to research methods course.
Currently, our human subjects practicum has students meeting as a group
in class for one hour a week. The remaining contact hours are spent by
students in various human services sites in the area (ex. Head Start,
Planned Parenthood, community mental health centers, etc.). The idea
for the research practicum is to adopt a similar model, where the
students enrolled in the course meet as a group once a week, but are
otherwise engaged in research under the supervision of either another
faculty member on campus, or in an off-campus research group.
Any suggestions you might have for texts or syllabi to accompany such a
course would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
