This isn't always the case. As her Alzheimer's progressed, my mother lost 
all interest in her records, which became just noise to her, including 
her precious collection of Gilbert & Sullivan, songs she had known since 
childhood.

Parenthetically, although I've never studied the field, as the article 
hints, music therapy seems to stand apart from most such therapies in its 
refreshing emphasis on empirical data and experimental evidence.

A quick check of the abstracts from one of their journals confirms this 
impression.
