Today is the 50th anniversary of the CP Snow's "Two Cultures" lecture.
The Guardian has a piece on how bad things have gotten.

Chris

I read this and I usually take issue with the historicism paradigm-the
paradigm that gives the impression that things were better off 50 years ago. I
am not saying that "presentism" is a better upgrade.I am not sure that people
are
interested in dialectics today, critical thinking skills and being
enlightened, and spending time reading books. There was a time when Psychology
majors would join the Psychology club and extend discussions. There was a time
when in additionto a text book pros would also have paperbacks as part of the
course. But who is doing this these days.
Interestingly enough,I think that this recession period could be a period to
re-examine values.I have this idea that this could be a period for a resurgence
of monasticism-a humanistic monasticism and return ironically to the good old
simple and intellectual days.
