A brief news article in the NY Times reports a study of mice song. A quote:
|The researchers exposed females to the recorded songs |of males, to calls made by newborn pups and to control |sounds. They found that the females responded only to the |males' songs, by approaching the source of the sound. | |But Dr. Hammerschmidt said there were some surprises |in the data. Females became habituated to the male songs |very quickly, and only responded the first time they heard |the sounds. See: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/23/science/23obmice.html?ref=science Hmmm, I wonder if there is an analog with humans? Also, I'm reminded of some poetry involving another species: |I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each. |I do not think that they will sing to me. One wonders if the female mice think that the male songs are for them or just an open call for a mating opportunity? -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- To make changes to your subscription contact: Bill Southerly ([email protected])
