What the heck. TIPS and Chris Green conspired to make this post irrelevant, although I tried twice to send it while the list was down.
But here it is anyway, belatedly. --------------- Since our neighbours in that powerful state to the south of us are oblivious to all except some obscure date on the calendar soon to arrive, I guess I'll have to do it myself. It's the birthday of a country which won its independence, not by violence and force of arms, but so imperceptibly that no one noticed. -- a country whose founding father was a notorious drunkard -- a country which apologizes when someone steps on its toes -- about which one of its leaders said, "A country if necessary but not necessarily a country" -- and one of its citizens declared it to be "not a real country" -- yet others tastelessly proclaim it "the greatest country in the world" (forgive them) Yes, it's July 1, the birthday of that country of, um, what's-its-name. Say happy birthday, eh? Stephen ----------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen L.
