The fundamental attribution error is more likely to be committed in Western than in non-Western societies. In the West, there is a penchant for emphasizing individualism so it seems inconceivable that our achievements can be attributed to situational and environmental variables. In non-Western societies where situational and environmental factors are an integrated part of holistic functioning, the power of extraneous variables are recognized. I suspect that in our recessionary age, some job seekers will finally recognize that the illusion of individualistic competence may not hold as they are now with an even playing field with others and where success may depend more on factors that require a high degree of recognizing the power of the situation and the environment.
