Michael, since you have Watson in this list, it is only fair to include Sherlock Holmes (cocaine). (Recent claims that newly discovered documents show that Holmes was an invention of a well known Scottish author can be safely discounted, and are characteristic of our current debunking culture.)

Incidentally, Freud didn't smoke dope. In the 1880s he recommended cocaine injections for morphine addiction, and used it on patients with other medical conditions. I'm not sure how he took it himself. In the 1890s he applied it through his nose to relieve symptoms of migraine and depression. But he was never an addict, and gave it up, probably because he found it exacerbated the symptoms over time. What he wouldn't give up was smoking cigars, even after he developed cancer of the mouth.
