It isn't pretty- that's why it's slang! As a blues player (at least one who tries!) and one who grew up around the blues I pursued that as my "musicology" topic while I was a music major. So here goes- In blues songs, "Jelly roll" is slang for sexual intercourse, a loving woman, female genitalia, or even any male or female who seems obsessed with any of the above. "Jelly" is, in that context, slang for semen - there are numerous other uses of the term, for example, I think everyone can work out the double meanings of "jelly bag" that sometimes shows up in blues and jazz songs. There are also numerous references to jelly roll in literature, for example Wolfe used it in "Look Homeward Angel", if memory serves. Just in terms of song titles, there is "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None o' My Jelly Roll," "Nobody in Town Can Bake a Jelly Roll Like Mine," "Jelly Roll Blues,": It is a long list! Jelly Roll Morton either picked or was given that name to signify his prowess with the ladies. Well, you asked. Tim _______________________________ Timothy O.
