Faculty at Dickinson can receive a stipend when supervising research during the summer but not during the academic year. It is just part of our job to supervise student research. It is highly valued by the dept and the college.
We do have a full time technician in the psych dept (has a MA) who can assist in a variety of research tasks. She doesn't supervise student research per say but can help faculty and students setup online studies, direct her paid student assistant to enter data, collect data, organize article in the lab or on endnote, etc. She also runs the participant pool and manages the research suite (scheduling rooms etc). It is a huge help. Faculty are not compensated for directing research (senior theses, independent studies) during the academic year. However, for our summer student-faculty collaborative research program, both faculty and students receive stipends (and students also receive room and board). I'm fairly certain that the person who coordinates that summer program does so as part of administrative duties (i.e., not an unpaid member of the faculty).
