Since I am chair at the moment, I get a lot of information from students and faculty about how many classes faculty cancel. I have no way to rate this, since I really don't know what is "normal." I'm curious whether anyone has come upon any sort of research or data on this. I need to know about what percent of classes the average college faculty member misses. Naturally, I realize this will vary from time to time, when, for example a faculty member is ill or has an ill family member, etc. I also want to exclude from this any classes where someone else proctors a test, for example. Still, I think some range should be able to be established-or perhaps is established.
Also, I am wondering whether, in other colleges, chairs are asked to approve absences for professional conferences, etc. Thanks for any feedback on this.
