I made an inquiry about Joyce Brothers to the public affairs office at
APA. Here is the reply. The answer is interesting but not conclusive.
Perhaps someone should give Joyce a call...
"What I know about the history of Joyce Brothers is the following: Back
in
the 70s (way before I started working for APA), Dr. Brothers started
endorsing products. This was (and still is as far as I know) a
violation of
Federal Trade Commission standards. At that point, APA decided to
terminate
Dr. Brothers membership. This is by far a quick and nonconclusive
summary of
the situation. APA never goes into much detail of why a member gets
kicked
out of the association, so the details of Dr. Brothers' plight are
at best
peripheral. "
