Since I am a psychometrician (or at least I play one from time to time), I
will say that it's true pretty much anywhere, for the reasons given. In
fact, myself and about 14 other people spent an hour at a graduate student
colloquim pointing out flaws in the study and hypothesizing about how it
got published. Name recognition was the largest vote getter for that.
Now, having said all of this, I have also heard Sternberg describe some of
this and agree with the premise. Namely, that you can not use GRE scores
alone to predict success in graduate school. It falls under the realm of
"necessary but not sufficient", and even then there are questions as to the
necessary part...
